Natural Forms

Shale

Growing up, I played in shale beds made of fragile layers of rocks. Recording history: These rocks are inscribed by water’s movement and contain fossil remains I collected in a jar.
— Ellen Baer

Created by Gravity & Wind

Ms. Baer pours thin paint above a canvas on the floor and allows the paint to flow and settle for several hours, or she blows the paint with a fan reminiscent of the strong winds she experienced while living in Buffalo, NY.

Time

In these works, Baer uses a process of building up and scraping through layers of paint to represent the creation and destruction of natural forms or the passage of time.
